I've been a Windows user for forever, and I'm trying to expand my knowledge and expertise with the computer and anything that has to deal with it (networking, maintenance, programming, etc.). However, despite Linux being an open OS, there are a lot of distributions available. I'd like my first experience with Linux to be challenging, not aggravating, so choosing the right Linux would be the first step. I have the following system: Mobo: MSI K9A2 Platinum v1 CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 MEM: 4GB DDR2 GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD3870 What I want to do is install Linux on a separate hard drive, which I will have available in a bit. Now, I don't want to give Linux (if it is installed into a partition) 250 GB of hard disk space either. If that can be avoided, that would be great. Anyways, back to the original question: Which distribution would be best for me as a beginner? The four I've encountered/narrowed to so far are Gentoo, Debian, Ubuntu, and Mandriva.
